Supermonastic is a solo project of artist and writer David Prescott-Steed, which is grounded in the compositional practice of musique concrète and critical listening. "Motility Vortex" is a new project focussed on the digital decontextualisation and processing of sounds found in the urban terrain of Melbourne, Australia, ranging from public transport and currency to private possessions, mechanical noises, drones, environmental sound, and vocal fragments. David's field recordings are mined for raw material for free-form collages wherein concrète elements are combined with, and juxtaposed against, more conventional percussive samples such as drum impulses—the aleatoric is woven through the repetitive and the structural, and each are thrown into play prior to a post-production editing phase. The resulting soundscapes present the listener with a conglomeration of abstract, non-linear drifts that seek to mobilise and exploit electroacoustic and acousmatic experience. David Prescott-Steed is a writer, field recordist, walker and urban explorer living in Melbourne, Australia, who teaches art history and theory at the Academy of Design. A regular contributor to the Kinokophonography project, David has participated in sound art and new music festivals in Northern Ireland, Finland, Poland, England, The Netherlands and Australia. His audio work has been released in Australia, Portugal, Germany, England, USA, Ukraine, Spain, and Sweden, and was recently included in the Melbourne Now exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.
